Follow the White Rabbit

The word "Searching…" displayed on the screen of Neo's computer opens the sequence, a subtle allusion to the search for the truth of what the Matrix is. Neo is captured in a close-up, sleeping. But his mind is not, as is implied by the music in the headphones, "I keep thinking…". The beat of the music, an obvious reference to Japanese Mangas, as well as the absence of any outside light, creates a gloomy, oppressive atmosphere.

Suddenly the screen goes blank. "Wake up, Neo…" And Neo obeys. "The Matrix has you…" And Neo's reaction is: "What the hell?…" Here the religious reference "hell" comes to describe the essence of the Matrix. The Matrix is hell. Neo feels trapped. He desperately pushes the Escape button on his keyboard.

The phrase "Follow the white rabbit" intrigues him. "Knock, knock, Neo", the screen flashes, amplified by a real knock at the door. This is an instance of dramatic irony, suggesting that it is time for Neo to wake up from the dream world and discover the real world.

The visitors have come to purchase an expensive software drug minidisk. Neo, who lives in the apartment number 101, thus in a digital dimension, is a guru of informatics. He is "my Savior", "my personal Jesus Christ", his client Choi says —all biblical references meant to suggest Neo's destiny is to be "The One."

An interesting detail as well, when Neo complains about not being able to tell whether he is dreaming or living things for real, Choi replies that he should unplug...

The tatoo of a white rabbit on the girl's shoulder persuades Neo to go out. Like Alice in Wonderland, he lets himself be guided, and follows the white rabbit…
